European Virtual Human Twins (VHT) Initiative: Accelerating innovation and making personalised medicine a reality through virtual human twins 

Date: 21 October 2025 

Location: Online and at Centre A. Borschette (CCAB), rue Froissart 36, 1040 Brussels 

The European Commission is organizing a high-level event to discuss the strategic vision for the European Virtual Human Twins (VHT) Initiative. Aiming to drive AI innovation and make personalized medicine a reality, this initiative was launched in December 2023, focusing on the development and adoption of virtual human twins in healthcare.  

The event will bring together key stakeholders, including policymakers, researchers, industry innovators, and healthcare professionals, to discuss the strategic direction of the initiative, especially in bringing VHT technologies into clinical practice. 

High-level strategic and technical sessions will take place with keynote speakers from a variety of institutes, directorates-general, and other relevant organizations, including DG CONNECT, DG SANTE, European Medicine Agency (EMA), and more.

EU-funded research on Virtual Human Twins (VHTs): fostering collaboration to accelerate innovation

The European Health and Digital Executive Agency (HaDEA) is organizing an event that will bring together leading EU-funded research initiatives on Virtual Human Twins (VHTs), including Horizon Europe projects and Innovative Health Initiative (IHI) projects.  

Among the speakers, Prof. Sandra Ortega-Martorell, TARGET Coordinator from Liverpool John Moores University, will take part in the event. She will present the project’s core vision — “Health virtual twins for the personalised management of stroke related to atrial fibrillation” — guiding the audience through TARGET’s path, key steps, and objectives.

It will represent an amazing opportunity to align current research initiatives with the strategic goals set out in the EDITH Roadmap and lay the foundation for collaboration in the development of the upcoming Advanced VHT Platform, aiming to drive VHT innovation and its integration into clinical practice.
